Chi Kappa Rho - Virginia M. Parker Scholarship 2019

The Virginia M. Parker Scholarship

Every spring semester, the Sisters of Chi Kappa Rho come together to organize and host the Virginia M. Parker Fashion Show. The fashion show was put into place to raise money for the scholarship as well as honor our founding advisor, Virginia M. Parker.  This scholarship is awarded annually to an academically and financially deserving female undergraduate who has demonstrated university or community involvement. This woman is not affiliated with the sorority itself, however. This will be the 54th year we have provided this scholarship to the women of the University of New Haven.

Chi Kappa Rho

Chi Kappa Rho is a sorority founded at the University of New Haven on December 2, 1963. Chi Kappa Rho’s mission is to promote an understanding of friendship among the women of the University of New Haven though community service and social ideals. Our motto is "Share the Friendship and Spirit". Some of our core values are scholarship, persistence, passion, and leadership. Through the Virginia M. Parker Scholarship we are encouraging other women on our campus to pursue academic excellence and sharing our values with others. We want to help a fellow woman here at the University continue her education by presenting her with this scholarship.

Chi Kappa Rho's philanthropies are Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Milford Rape Crisis Center (MRCC). Throughout the year we fundraise to support MADD monetarily as well as raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence. Some of our events for MADD include March MADDness, guest speakers, as well as the on-campus MADD Walk. Our work with MRCC is to support survivors of sexual assault through raising awareness as well as clothing donations throughout the year. The SASS walk is the Sexual Assault Survivors and Supporters Walk that we host here on campus (shown below). Other community service events include supply drives for veterans, creating cards for SMILOW Cancer Research patients, and blood drives with the Red Cross.

A Personal Thank You from a Previous Scholarship Recipient

"I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for making the Virginia M. Parker Scholarship possible. I am truly honored to be a recipient of this award and I am sincerely grateful of your support... Because of your generous scholarship, my financial burden has been lessened. In this school year, I look forward to maintaining my GPA as well as graduating in the spring of 2018. After college, I would love to continue my education and attend graduate school. In the future, my dream is to pursue a career with the Drug Enforcement Administration. With the help of your generous donation, I no longer face financial insecurity for this school year."
