University of New Haven Students Mastering Disaster
Envision being among the first responders for a car or drug lab explosion. You are surrounded by victims and smoke from the fire. Everyone is frantic and searching for safety. What do you do?
The University of New Haven is a leader in experiential education. The annual Mass Casualty Exercise Event is a cross-campus simulated crisis situation where students respond to unexpected emergencies. This elaborate drill is the product of several months of work from areas in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, National Security, Legal Studies, Fire Science, EMS, Communications, Hospitality and more. Over 300 students participate in the event.
The students do not know what the incident will be, and is a surprise to everyone. Once the incident occurs, they must respond, communicate with one another, and determine how quickly they can triage and treat victims. Communications students will report on the disaster as it occurs through a command center.
The Mass Casualty Exercise Event is in it's third year and has grown immensely since its inauguration. We need your help in order for the event to continue to prosper. Necessary supplies include but are not limited to: dummy bodies and body bags, mock weapons, hazmat materials, incident kits, safety vests, decontamination supplies and evidence/biohazard bags.
